Military intensifies training to ‘secure home front’

The armed forces on Tuesday began a training program called “Victory – 5” to prepare low-ranked officers for Egypt’s new security challenges.

Since January, the army has been securing certain government institutions, including the state television building in Maspero, where clashes erupted between troops and Coptic demonstrators on Sunday, killing 25 people and injuring more than 300 others.

Human rights groups have monitored several instances of the military using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators since it began ruling the country in February following the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak.
