Military: Officers accused in Maspero, virginity test cases being prosecuted

The military is prosecuting armed forces personnel accused of misconduct in October's Maspero violence and of carrying out virginity tests on female protesters, Adel al-Marasy, head of the Military Judicial Authority, said Tuesday.

The military faces accusations of responsibility for the deaths of 27 protesters in a Coptic-led march on 9 October outside the Maspero state TV building to protest mounting assaults on churches in Egypt. One military personnel member also died in the violence. Army officials have said the deaths were accidents.

In March, military officers were accused of conducting virginity tests on female protesters who had been arrested in Tahrir Square.

Marasy rebuffed media reports that no legal action has been taken against the military officers accused of running over Maspero protesters with armed vehicles.

A military court is handling the case, Marasy said. He added that families of those killed can submit case-related requests to the military prosecution.

The virginity test accusations were referred to a military court after investigations and eyewitness questioning were completed, Marasy said.

Marasy emphasized the right of all citizens fair trials and the independence of the judiciary.
