Military police chief denies assaulting protesters

The military police who confronted protesters in Abbasseya Square on Saturday exercised self-control, said Major General Hamdy Bedein, chief of the military police, on Saturday, adding that some of officers were injured.

The state controlled Nile News channel quoted Bedein denying that military police had assaulted protesters in Alexandria and Suez.

He also said that military police were instructed to not clash with protesters.

Protesters in Abbasseya on Saturday were fiercer than those there on Friday, he said, adding that the march started peacefully from Tahrir Square. However, some protesters vandalized private property, an act which ignited the clashes.

The military police, according to Bedein, collaborated with the civil police to end clashes among protesters.

He added that the civil police was present to calculate damages and file reports so that judicial authorities could investigate the incidents.
