Morsy to Haniyeh: Egypt supports Qatari reconstruction of Gaza

President Mohamed Morsy has told Hamas that he supports the reconstruction project funded by Qatar in the Gaza Strip, Hamas government spokesperson Taher al-Nunu said in a statement Saturday.

Nunu added that Morsy on Friday telephoned Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas government in Gaza, and assured that Egypt will help with the Qatari funded project, the statement added.

Last week, Qatar launched a US$254 million plan to rebuild and modernize Gaza, the biggest injection of reconstruction aid for the Palestinian enclave since it was devastated in an Israeli military offensive nearly four years ago.

The Qatar project will repair three main roads, establish a new town, build a hospital and residential buildings and overhaul the enclave’s infrastructure.

Nunu added in his statement that Haniyeh is in contact with the both the Egyptian and the Qatari leadership regarding the reconstruction project. He added that he predicts that the upcoming days would carry good news for the Palestinian people and Gaza Strip, without giving further details.

Nunu also said that Haniyeh recently held a meeting with the head of the Qatari National Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, Mohamed al-Emadi, after the latter's return from a visit to Cairo where he met Egyptian officials.
