Mubarak trial clash suspects referred for trial on Thursday

Egypt's Public Prosecution on Tuesday released 22 people arrested over clashes that broke out during former President Hosni Mubarak's trial on Monday.

The suspects were referred for immediate trial on Thursday, charged with assaulting public employees and injuring them while they worked to secure the Police Academy.

The suspects denied the charges, giving various explanations as to why they were present outside the academy. Some said they came to support the former president. They also said they were surprised by the clashes that broke out.

Others said they were there to attend the trial session and to monitor the developments first-hand after the broadcasting of the trials was suspended. The clashes then broke out, they said, and they were arrested.

The fighting left 25 people injured, 14 of whom were policemen.
