The Muslim Brotherhood on Friday started an emergency two-day meeting to name the president and secretary general for the group's proposed Freedom and Justice Party.
The meeting, held by the Brotherhood's Shura Council in Moqattam, Cairo, will also decide the percentage of seats the group will contest in the upcoming parliamentary election and members will discuss how to develop the party.
The Brotherhood conducted its meeting in secrecy, blocking the media from covering its conference. However, informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the session opened with a speech from Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie.
In his speech, Badie reportedly said, “The whole world now sees the Brotherhood as a group whose actions speak louder that its words, after Egypt saw long years of oppression and tyranny in which the role of the Brotherhood was curtailed.”
Badie highlighted the importance of cooperation between the group and other political powers, Islamic movements and Copts. He also described the relationship between the Brotherhood and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and interim cabinet is stable.
Sources also said that the group’s council is inclined to choose Saad al-Katatny, the group's spokesperson, as president of the party. Mohamed Morsy, another Brotherhood leader, is also a possible candidate.
Saad al-Husseiny and Essam al-Erian, both members of the Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau, are competitors for the position of secretary general.
