Muslim Brotherhood picks parliamentary candidates

Mohamed Saad al-Katatny, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) Guidance Bureau and leader of the MB parliamentary bloc, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the MB may run in the upcoming parliamentary elections due to changes in the stances of other parties.

Al-Katatny said that MB offices across governorates have selected candidates for the forthcoming elections. Names were submitted to the MB Shura Council which will announce the results within days.

Al-Katatny denied that candidates were instructed to run by either the MB Guidance Bureau or Shura Council, saying that they are individual initiatives.

In related context, al-Sayyed al-Badawi, Wafd Party chief, announced that the party will participate in the November elections following a 56.7 percent vote in favor by the party’s general assembly.

In a press conference held yesterday, al-Badawi said Wafd will launch a huge print and television advertising campaign in October.

Al-Badawi announced that the number of candidates across governorates has reached 250. Candidates will be assessed by an election committee presided over by Fouad Badrawi, the party’s vice-chief.

Al-Badawi expects that strong candidates will grab a number of seats. He also described the party’s 43 percent refusal rate to stand for elections as the best response to the refusal by the National Democratic Party to provide fair election guarantees.
