Family of French national who died in Egyptian prison files complaint

The family of a French citizen who was allegedly beaten to death by detainees at the Qasr al-Nil police station filed a complaint before French courts to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased French national, Eric Lang, 49, was allegedly arrested for breaking the curfew.

The lawyers for the French family told the press on Tuesday that the mother and sister of Lang, who was a French language teacher and a translator, submitted their complaint to concerned authorities in the French city of Nantes.

The lawyers said that Lang had been living in Egypt for several years and was arrested on 6 September in Cairo and detained at Qasr al-Nil Police Station in downtown Cairo.

The lawyers said the complaint seeks to uncover the details about Lang’s death.

An Egyptian security source, meanwhile, said Lang was arrested for breaking the curfew and was not carrying a valid residency permit. He was also drunk at the time of the arrest.
