Nine people were killed Monday during clashes between protesters demanding the reinstatement of deposed President Mohamed Morsy and citizens in Cairo, Giza and Qalyubiya, the Health Ministry said.
Violence has been on the rise since the army deposed the former leader in response to popular protests on 30 June. His supporters denounce the move as a military coup and have staged protests, clashing with opponents, since the president's ouster on 3 July.
According to the ministry’s emergency services chief, Khaled al-Khatib, six people were killed and 33 others injured at al-Nahda Square and Giza Square near Cairo University when Morsy supporters blocked traffic, prompting street vendors and passers-by to clash.
Another person was also killed near Tahrir Square when violence erupted following a march by Morsy supporters to the U.S. embassy, al-Khatib added.
Two others were killed and 44 injured in violence at the farmland road in Qalyubiya, following a protest by Morsy backers.
