Official sources deny attempt on life of VP

Egyptian official sources today categorically denied that Vice President Omar Suleiman was subjected to an assassination attempt that led to the death of two of his guards.

Fox News had cited US sources as saying that an attempt was made on the life of Suleiman a few days ago, leaving two of his guards dead. The American news website said, however, that the identities of the perpetrators of the attack had not been determined.

In statements to state-owned media, informed sources dismissed the news as false, adding that Suleiman was not even at the place where the claimed assassination attempt took place. The statements also accused the Muslim Brotherhood of circulating rumors.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday that news reports of an assassination attempt on Egypt's vice president put into "sharp relief" the challenges of the standoff between government and protesters.
