Palestinian president in Cairo for talks over reconciliation pact

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will arrive in Cairo Saturday for talks with Egyptian officials concerning the Palestinian reconciliation pact signed in May.

Palestinian Ambassador to Cairo Barakat al-Farra said in a statement Thursday that the talks will tackle obstacles to achieving the reconciliation terms.

Farra added that Abbas will hold talks with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), on Sunday, and will also meet with Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby, Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and Egyptian Intelligence Chief Mourad Mowafy during his visit.

Farra said talks between Abbas and Tantawi are of special importance.

The meetings will focus on the reconciliation issue, in light of Doha Declaration and an agreement on forming an interim Palestinain government led by Abbas to prepare for elections and reconstruct Gaza, Farra said.

The Palestinain president, according to Farra, will take part in the Arab Peace Initiative Committee meeting scheduled to take place in Cairo on Sunday.
