PM reviews progress on Ataba Market redevelopment project

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inspected on Saturday 6/9/2025 ongoing work to redevelop Ataba Market in central Cairo, as part of the government’s wider plan to modernize historic and informal markets into organized commercial zones that preserve their architectural character.

During his visit, Madbouly confirmed the project is designed to improve infrastructure, integrate informal vendors into the formal economy, and upgrade the area’s commercial value.

According to Local Development Minister Manal Awad, the first phase of the project, carried out by the Cairo Reconstruction Authority, includes the renovation of three key streets in the market ( Youssef Naguib, al-Gohary, and Ataba al-Khadraa). So far, 321 meters have been redeveloped.

She added that emergency lanes were maintained, and facades of 105 shops have been updated under a unified visual identity. Three architecturally significant buildings were restored, and 11 surrounding properties were upgraded.

Infrastructure works are fully completed, covering sewage, water, electricity, telecom, and gas.

Development stands at 80 percent, including interlock pavement, LED lighting, new shop signage using high-quality materials, modern vendor stalls, and a surveillance camera network.

It is noteworthy that a dedicated area is also being prepared for street vendors in a structured layout to enhance order and aesthetics in the square.
