Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly stated that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued directives to enhance and upgrade Lake Bardawil, emphasizing the need for close coordination among all relevant entities to ensure the lake appears in its best possible condition.
This came during a meeting the premier chaired on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, to follow up on progress in implementing the Lake Bardawil development and rehabilitation project.
The meeting was attended by Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Essam Waly of the “Future of Egypt” Authority, Salah Moselhy, Chairman of the General Authority for Fish Resources Development and officials from other concerned entities.
Madbouly explained that the project includes developing the lake and deepening and widening its water channels that connect it to the Mediterranean Sea.
It also involves reusing lake sediments by treating, purifying, and reinjecting them into the soil, a process expected to yield significant developmental and environmental benefits.
Cabinet Spokesperson Mohamed al-Homsany said that the meeting reviewed the latest updates on the various ongoing activities at Lake Bardawil.
These include dredging operations, channel maintenance, pier development and fish market infrastructure improvements, all of which aim to drive economic development through the revitalization of the lake.
He added that during the meeting, it was noted that feedback and recommendations from the project’s consulting firm will be collected regarding any additional works needed to maximize the lake’s development and ensure optimal utilization in the coming phase.
Lake Bardawil is a large, very saline lagoon nearby the protected area of Zaranik in Egypt on the north coast of the Sinai Peninsula. It is an important source of local and commercial fish in Egypt, including seabass, seabream, sole, grey mullet, eel, meagre, and white grouper.
