PM says no foreign intervention needed to protect Copts

Egypt renewed its refusal to allow foreign intervention in its affairs in the aftermath of two recent attacks on Coptic Christians.

In an interview with state TV Wednesday, Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif said Egypt is totally capable of protecting its citizens, whether they are members of the minority or the majority. Egypt refuses foreign intervention in its affairs regarding Copts and Muslims, added Nazif.

Responding to criticism from American and European bodies regarding the Alexandria church bombing, Nazif said, “Egypt doesn’t mind that some of our friends would express sorrow and give advice. However, going beyond that is unacceptable."

The Alexandria terrorist attack, according to Nazif, shows that the country's national unity is being targeted and that the incident did not result from sectarian strife.

“I was amazed by Egyptians' reactions to the Alexandria incidents when I saw Muslims ready to form human shields to protect Egypt’s churches,” Nazif said. “Alexandria’s al-Qiddissine church was bombed on New Year's Eve leaving 23 dead and scores of others injured."
