PM says reducing public debt, inflation among key targets of government in 2026

CAIRO, Dec 10 (MENA) – Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said one of the government’s key targets for 2026 is to reduce public debt and inflation, a move that would help increase spending on the health and education sectors.

He added that accelerating the implementation of the universal health insurance project and the “Decent Life” rural development initiative—both prioritized by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi—remains central to the government’s agenda.

Responding to a question from the Middle East News Agency (MENA) during a press conference following Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, Madbouli said the most important and urgent file for the government is debt reduction.

He noted that economic indicators and productive sectors are showing clear improvement, alongside rising exports, which are moving in the right direction.

He said the government is moving decisively to reduce both overall and external debt through full coordination between the economic group and the Central Bank.

He added that the current conditions provide an opportunity to advance efforts to reduce debt and debt-servicing costs, both of which are directly tied to interest rates, which are expected to fall as inflation continues to ease—something the government is working to achieve steadily.

Madbouli said success in lowering debt and inflation will allow the state to channel more spending into education and healthcare.

He stressed that the government places highest priority on accelerating the implementation of two of the country’s most significant national projects: the universal health insurance scheme and the “Decent Life” initiative to develop rural Egypt, describing them as among the largest and most vital projects in Egypt’s history.

Accelerating the completion of these major projects, he said, will deliver the greatest possible benefit to citizens, improve service quality and enhance living standards in the coming years. (MENA)
