Police seargent Abdallah Mohamed was killed in the explosion of al-Mahkama Square in Heliopolis on Friday morning, said Assistant Interior Minister Abdel Fattah Othman.
The explosion in al-Mahkama Square was caused by a homemade bomb that was planted next to a traffic police booth, Othman added.
Major General Gamal Halawa, director of Civil Protection Agency, said that the Mohamed died of his wounds.
The security authorities are doing their best to hunt down terrorist elements, Othman said.
Security forces closed the entrances of al-Mahkama Square.and explosive experts inspected the surrounding area to confirm there were no other bombs.
Othman appealed to citizens to cooperate with the security services through rapid reporting of any strange objects or suspected persons.
