Poll: 69% of Egyptians believe regime trials are too slow

Sixty-nine percent of Egyptians believe the trials of former members of ex-President Hosni Mubarak's regime are proceeding too slowly, according to a recent government poll.

The Information and Decision Support Center, the cabinet's internal think tank, conducted the poll and announced the results Tuesday.

Fifteen percent of poll participants said the trials are proceeding at a reasonable rate, while 16 percent abstained from answering.

Of all participants, 67 percent said they approve of Mubarak's trial, while 13 percent said they are opposed to the trial. Twenty percent of participants gave no answer.

The majority of participants said they believe Mubarak should be tried for causing conditions in Egypt to deteriorate and for spreading corruption. The third most provided reason was that Mubarak made mistakes and should be tried.

Participants also said Mubarak should be tried for his involvement in the killing of protesters and to give a lesson to future leaders.

The last reason participants gave for supporting the trial of Mubarak was their desire to find out whether or not Mubarak is guilty.

Other participants said they reject Mubarak’s trial because he achieved a good deal for Egypt. The second reason they offered is his old age, and third that he is an Egyptian icon.

Finally, they said Mubarak should not be tried because he is not the only person responsible for corruption in Egypt.
