Portuguese researchers develop vaccine against bioterrorism

A team of researchers at the University of Coimbra in Portugal have developed a nasal vaccine to counter any threat of deadly bioterrorism. The search was under a project proposed by the Portuguese Defense Ministry and approved by the European Defence Agency.

The nasal vaccine, which is given only to the army, was not yet proven 100 percent effective, but could be more effective if administered by injection.

The team found in the search, which took three years, that the nasal vaccine produces protective antibodies in the mucous membrane that bar the flow of anthrax into the bloodstream. It was successfully tested on laboratory animals.
