Eleven prisoners fled and five others were injured after armed men attacked the Moqattam police department Monday evening, a security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Security forces exchanged fire with the assailants at the scene and number of security officials were injured and transferred to a hospital for treatment.
Joint forces of the police and army rushed to the area in an effort to re-arrest the fleeing prisoners.
The source said that the authorities are now counting the arms that were in the department during the attack, out of suspicion that some may have been stolen.
The attack was accompanied by riots by the prisoners inside the department.
