Hundreds of supporters of independent MP Mostafa Bakri from the regions of Helwan and Tebbeen protested again yesterday against a recent government decision to abolish their geographic constituency.
The protesters carried banners attacking Ahmed Ezz, the ruling National Democratic Party’s secretary for organizational affairs, and urged President Hosni Mubarak to overturn the decision.
Meanwhile, around 25 people from the village of Omreyyah in Beheira began an open-ended strike before parliament to demand an investigation into alleged land ownership violations. They claimed that three local families were pressured by a government official to surrender ownership of certain plots of land.
At the same time, several subscribers to the El-Qantara Sharq land reclamation project requested police protection from local Bedouin tribesmen, saying that they had been unable to access the land since receiving it from the government.
Contracted workers from the Egyptian Telephone Company said they would also maintain their ongoing protest outside parliament until the factory at which they work relaunches operations and they are treated on an equal footing with their colleagues.
Amonsito workers, for their part, who have been staging an open-ended sit-in before the Shura Council building, continued their attacks on Finance Minister Youssef Boutros-Ghali after being refused compensation by the Tax Authority.
