Rafah crossing with Gaza open for patients, students

Egyptian authorities opened the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday morning.

The border crossing is scheduled to open for four hours on both Wednesday and Thursday to allow humanitarian cases, students and Palestinian patients through.

An official security source said the crossing was open after contacts between Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian officials.

Eyewitnesses on the Palestinian side of the border said that Hamas police assaulted a number of Palestinian students trying to cross into Egypt, after they chanted against the Islamic movement due to restrictions and unfair treatment for non-Hamas students in Gaza.

Egyptian authorities had closed the crossing after two bombings that targeted the headquarters of the military intelligence and a security checkpoint in Rafah last Wednesday.
