Railways cancel 17 more low-cost wagons citing losses

Egyptian National Railways has cancelled 17 more third-class, low-cost trains citing redundancy and unprofitability.

This drives the total number of trains taken out of service in less than two months to 34, according to Ahmed Ibrahim, a spokesperson for the Transport Ministry, adding that the recently cancelled batch operated on short suburban lines.

“The Transport Minister is monitoring the operations plan on a daily basis and would never hesitate to cancel any train that does not yield an economic or civilian service profit in order to stop the railway drain,” Ibrahim stated.

The railway authority said in a closing balance statement last July that it sustained losses worth LE5 billion in 2014.
