Retrial of police officer convicted of killing protester adjourned to June

A lawyer challenged Thursday the testimony of the sole witness in one a case involving the killing of protesters outside a police station during the 25 January revolution.

The Cairo Criminal Court today held the first session of a retrial for police officer Mohamed Zakariya who is accused of killing a protester outside the Old Cairo Police Station on the Friday of Anger, 28 January 2011. The court decided to adjourn the case until 6 June.

Another court had sentenced Zakariya to 15 years in jail in absentia last year, but he appealed the verdict.

The prosecutor said that on 28 January, Zakariya committed murder by shooting the victim, Mohamed Ali Eid, who was protesting outside the Old Cairo police station. Zakariya denied the charges.

Gameel Ismail, a member of Zakariya’s defense team, submitted as evidence documentation from a hospital saying that the victim reached hospital at 12:30 pm, whereas the sole eyewitness said that he saw Zakariya around 5:30 pm shooting at protesters and fatally injuring the victim.

The session started at 1:30 pm. Zakariya attended willingly without the court summoning him.
