Seismic network records 6.3 magnitude earthquake

The Egyptian National Seismic Network recorded a 6.3 magnitude earthquake at 3:55 pm on Monday that could be felt in the northern and Delta governorates and some areas of greater Cairo. No damage was reported.

The earthquake’s epicenter was about 650 km outside of Cairo and 140 km from the Turkish Rhode Islands, occurring 33 km under the Mediterranean Sea, according to Hatem Awda, head of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics.

Small aftershocks are to be expected but should be barely noticeable, Awda said.
