Selmy to discuss constitutional principles document with rights groups

Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Selmy will hold meeting with representatives of 100 rights organizations at parliament on Wednesday night

The meeting will tackle the document entitled “Basic Constitutional Principles.”

Nasser Amin, director of the Arab Center for Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession and the meeting's coordinator, said it aims at “discussing visions of the civil society organizations and their proposals related to several controversial issues.”

Amin told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the meeting will focus mainly on how participants view the document and preparations for upcoming parliamentary elections through a road map, created by the groups, on how to achieve democratic reform.

He ruled out possibility that the meeting would discuss recent attacks against the civil community organizations “because it’s too small to be discussed,” he said. He described such attacks as “an extension of the former regime’s policies, which used to tarnish images of rights groups working in Egypt.”
