Sharaf meets potential information minister

Egypt's Prime Minister Essam Sharaf met Thursday with journalist Osama Heikal, who is likely slated to fill the vacant post of information minister.

Heikal said Sharaf reversed an earlier government decision to cancel the Information Ministry. Heikal added that he had been instructed to reorganize the media establishment and help Egypt restore its standing in the field of information. His statements essentially confirmed that he had received the post, although no official announcement has been made.

Sharaf, meanwhile, said he is fully aware of the key role media outlets play in Egypt's transition phase and voiced his trust in local media.

Heikal was recently named chief editor of the independent daily Al-Wafd in the first elections in the paper's history.
