Soldier killed in new attack on Arish checkpoint

A security officer was killed while on duty at a checkpoint in Arish, North Sinai, as the region witnesses mounting attacks by unknown assailants on police and army forces since the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsy by the Armed Forces three weeks ago.

Mohamed Khamis Abdel Naby, 23, was targeted by shooters while on duty at the Abu Sokkar checkpoint south of Arish, sustaining bullets in the chest. He died immediately and his body was taken to the city’s military hospital.

On Monday, an official from the Health Ministry department in North Sinai was quoted by local reports as saying that 14 army and police servicemen have been killed since Morsy’s ouster on 3 July.
