Source: Pope approves new regulations on personal status

According to sources from the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Tawadros II has approved the new regulations regarding personal status. The law will be reviewed within 48 hours by group of legal experts in the Mellit council and the Coptic endowments authority.

Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the source said the new regulations will reduce the time required to complete certain formalities, and that they include changes in litigation procedures, in accordance with the Pope's instructions, to prevent the accumulation of personal status issues.

The source added that once the notes and comments regarding the new regulations are concluded, they will be applied during the first half of July, once the training of dozens of priests in Europe, US, Australia and Gharbiya on handling personal status issues is complete.

Currently, personal status issues, according to the source, do not exceed 4,000 cases.

Kamil Seddeeq, secretary of the Mellit council in Alexandria, called for forming a group of scholars and legal experts in the personal status field, in order to resolve the pending issues in accordance with the agred upon regulations, without violating religious orders.
