State Council rejects female judges

In an urgent general assembly of the State Council on Monday, 80 percent of the voters opposed the appointment of female judges, with 334 votes against the proposal and 42 votes for it.

However, Council President Mohamed el-Husseiny remarked that the final word on the matter lies with the council’s special board.

"We didn’t come here for the council to disregard our opinion," said judge Mohamed Qeshta, commenting on El-Husseiny’s remark.

The assembly started at 10:00 AM, and quorum was reached by 1:00 PM, with 380 council members out of a total of 614 members. Reporters were not allowed to attend the session.
