Sulaf Fawakherji makes directorial debut at Alex festival

Syrian drama star Sulaf Fawakherji will compete in the Alexandria Film Festival’s 31st edition, starting on Wednesday, with her directorial debut, "Cherry Messages".

The movie is set in Syria in 1946 and will be shown within the Arab film category.

The director told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the film depicts changes in Syria’s Golan since its independence from France, through to the 1970s, in the form of a love story between two young Syrians.

Fawakherji explained that the movie chronicles political changes but with a romantic streak to help entice moviegoers.

She added that her film is scheduled for screening on Monday, September 7.

Though she encountered several challenges during her first foray as a director, including the selection filming locations, Fawakherji felt she discovered her “true identity” as a director.

The Alexandria Film Festival’s 31st edition will run from September 3-9.
