Suleiman’s campaign says it will not back another candidate

The official presidential campaign of former intelligence chief Omar Suleiman said Friday it does not and will not support any candidate for president after Suleiman’s disqualification.

The campaign stressed on its Facebook page "[The campaign] was created for Omar Suleiman, and will remain only for him. We have embraced an idea and we will always be inspired by his morals and principles."

The page, which has more than 291,000 fans, said it decided to prevent the publishing of any news about candidates and appealed to its members not to post any comments on the page.

Suleiman's campaign statement came after Ahmed Shafiq's Facebook page had announced that Suleiman's campaign had joined them at full capacity.

The Presidential Elections Commission disqualified Suleiman on 17 April after he failed to meet the requirements for candidacy. The commission said that Suleiman did not collect signatures from enough governorates.

The commission excluded Shafiq from the presidential race on Tuesday after the military council approved a law preventing former regime officials from running for public office. The commission reversed its decision after Shafiq submitted an appeal on Wednesday. Suleiman and Shafiq were appointed by former President Mubarak to the posts of vice president and prime minister, respectively, during the 25 January uprising that led to his ouster.
