Surgery stops Mohamed Monier from playing planned New Year’s gig

For the second year in a row, singer Mohamed Monier will not be performing at planned New Year’s festivities, as the celebrated crooner is currently recuperating from a spine operation performed last week in Germany.

Doctors had ordered the surgery after Monier reported severe pain in his spine that had affected movement in his left arm.

Monier’s business manager and cousin, Mahmoud Monier, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the singer had been discharged from hospital only one day after the five-hour operation, but that he had been readmitted due to a noticeable deterioration of his condition.

Mahmoud said the singer’s health had improved again on Thursday, noting that he was now expected to be discharged within the next few days, "after which he will spend ten days in Germany to recuperate before returning to Egypt.”

Mahmoud added, however, that Monier would be unable to perform at scheduled New Year's celebrations at the Cairo Opera House due to his medical condition.
