Tantawi heads to Saudi Arabia to offer condolences for crown prince’s death

The head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, and an accompanying delegation on Tuesday headed to Saudi Arabia to offer condolences for the death of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud, who was heir to the Saudi throne.

The state-run news agency MENA said the delegation included Electricity and Energy Minister Hassan Younis, Air Force Commander-in-Chief Reda Hafez and Supreme Council of the Armed Forces member Lieutenant Mokhtar al-Mulla.
 
Prince Sultan, who was also the Saudi deputy prime minister and defense minister, died on Saturday and is expected to be buried on Tuesday. Several world leaders, as well as US Vice President Joe Biden, are also expected to arrive in Saudi Arabia to offer their condolences.
 
The crown prince's body arrived on Monday evening from New York, where he had been receiving treatment since June, on a private jet that landed at Riyadh Air Base.
 
US President Barack Obama sent his personal condolences and announced that Biden would be visiting Riyadh to offer condolences during the official mourning period.
 
According to Iranian TV reports, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi will arrive in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to attend the funeral.
