Traffic accidents kill 24 in one day

Two road accidents this morning in Qalyubiya and Beheira left 24 killed and another nine injured.

The first accident happened on the Qalyoub Bridge on the Alexandria agricultural road when one of the front tires of a truck carrying wood suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control of the steering wheel and crash into a full microbus. The accident killed 14 people and another five were injured.

Traffic was blocked for two hours until the wreckage was removed.

The victims were transported to the Qalyoub Public Hospital and the prosecution office was notified of the crash.

In Beheira another accident happened when a truck bound for Alexandria slowed down to make a U-turn and was hit from behind by a speeding cab. The crash left ten people dead, including the driver of the cab, and another four were injured.

The prosecution office has ordered that the dead be buried while investigations continue.

Around 7,000 people die and 32,000 are injured in road accidents in Egypt each year, according to official estimates.
Egypt's highways and roads are known to be more hazardous over the summer period as well as the ongoing month of Ramadan, during which many Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.
