Trial of Central Bank embezzler postponed to 22 November

The Giza Criminal Court has decided to delay once more the trial of Fadya al-Sharqawi, a former Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) employee charged with embezzling LE2.8 million from the CBE's mint.

The trial was postponed after the defendant failed to show up in court.

The defendant was not brought from al-Qanater prison until the end of the session, which had been scheduled to hear the remaining witnesses after the head of the safe mint testified on Tuesday.

The court earlier heard the testimony of the defendant, who said she only confessed to committing the crime after she was told that security had arrested her son and husband to pressure her into confessing to the crime.

The defendant's brother said al-Sharqawi had been working at the CBE for 25 years, and accused the police of fabricating the charges.

The defendant had previously confessed to embezzling the money over time in order to pay off enormous debts she accumulated through becoming involved in the illegal trade of gold. She has since retracted her admission.
