Truce negotiations between military and protesters fail

Mediation attempts on Sunday failed to bring about a truce between protesters and security forces on Qasr al-Aini Street.

Those involved in the negotiations included Justice Party MP Mostafa al-Naggar, MP Amr Hamzawy, Sheikh Mostafa Hegazy, and academic Moataz Abdel Fattah.

Meanwhile, the armed forces and police refused to stop the violence, while policemen attempted to assault Hamzawy before security forces intervened to protect him.

Hamzawy was then led into the Interior Ministry by Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) member Major General Saeed Abbas and Cairo Security Director Major General Mohsen Murad to protect him from police and members of the armed forces.

Meanwhile, Naggar told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the negotiations failed due to anger and a desire to avenge victims of the clashes.

Naggar said the only solution was to cancel the Shura Council elections and promptly hold presidential elections.

“There is no longer any time for the idea of the writing the constitution first, because the country can take it no more,” he said.
