Two children killed after building collapses in Sharqiya

An 8-year old and a 17-year old were killed when a building collapsed in Minya al-Qamh, Sharqiya, late Monday, according to the Health Ministry.

Head of the province’s health department, Sherif Makkin, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that three other people were wounded in the accident.

The search continues for more victims, he said.

Sharqiya Governor Khaled Saeed told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the catastrophe was caused by construction to the neighboring building that damaged the building's foundation. The owner of the building under construction and the contractor were referred to investigation.

The governor revealed that cracks were discovered along other buildings in the same vicinity, where residents were ordered to evacuate for safety.

Residents in the area assisted the armed forces with lifting debris and searching for victims.

It is not uncommon for buildings to collapse in Egypt, an occurrence which is often blamed on poor construction and disorderly implementation of demolition orders.
