Upper Egypt train traffic halted as rail car derailed

A rail car on the Cairo-Aswan line derailed near Sohag.

Rashad Abdel Aaty, vice-chief of the authority, attributed the rail car derailment to the rails being unfastened.

The driver of an approaching train stopped breaked early enough to prevent the train from colliding and derailing. The stop, however, halted the Upper Egypt-bound trains.

Sohag security services provided cars to transfer passengers in nearby governorates.

Officials said technicians from the railway authority are currently fixing the train, so service can resume.

Egypt's railways suffer from underfunding and infrequent maintenance, which increases the risk of accidents.
