US State Dept. criticizes human rights violations in Egypt

A US State Department spokesman has expressed concern over the alleged killing of Khaled Saeed at the hands of the Egyptian police.
The US, like the European Union, would like the Egyptian government to investigate the incident and punish its perpetrators, said Mark Toner, acting deputy department spokesperson.
He further said the US State Department has expressed its concern to the Egyptian government over what he described as the “continuing violation” of human rights in Egypt.
The Egyptian street is boiling with demands for constitutional and democratic reforms, added Toner, who denied however that the US government is putting any pressure on the Egyptian government in this regard.
In related news, the Coalition of Egyptian Organizations in North America has announced it is organizing a protest in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Washington next Wednesday, concurrent with the embassy’s celebrations of the 1952 revolution.
