Venezuelan democracy champion María Corina Machado wins 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, edging out Trump

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuela’s María Corina Machado, media outlets reported.

The announcement comes after US President Donald Trump had openly expressed his hope of winning the award, claiming that he had “ended seven wars,” and recently hinted he might “end an eighth” if his peace plan resolved the war in Gaza.

Machado is a Venezuelan opposition leader, industrial engineer, and human rights advocate.

She has been a prominent and unwavering critic of the authoritarian regimes of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro for over two decades.

Despite being barred from holding public office and facing constant threats, she has remained a unifying figure for Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement, often operating from hiding within the country.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Peace Prize to Machado for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

The Committee praised her as a “brave and committed champion of peace” who embodies civilian courage and shows that the tools of democracy are essential tools for peace.
