Video: Large crocodile spotted in Egypt’s Sharqiya drainage canal

Residents of Ezbet al-Sidrah in Belbeis Center, Sharqiya Governorate, reported sighting a large crocodile along the banks of a local drainage canal, prompting urgent calls for authority intervention to ensure public safety.

A viral video circulating online shows the crocodile emerging from the canal’s embankment as local residents passed by, before returning to the water seconds later.

Local residents noted that sightings have become increasingly common over recent months, with crocodiles observed both swimming in the canal and basking for minutes at a time.

Recurring sightings

Residents reported witnessing multiple crocodiles simultaneously on previous occasions, both in the water and along the embankments.

Community members emphasized that this is not an isolated event, noting that authorities successfully captured a crocodile in the area last winter, which was subsequently transferred to an authorized facility.

Appeals for immediate public safety action

These sustained sightings near canal banks have fueled growing safety concerns, particularly given the proximity of local foot traffic to the water’s edge.

Residents are urging environmental and local authorities to inspect the site immediately, conduct a comprehensive sweep of the canal to clear any remaining crocodiles, and implement strict safety measures to secure populated areas.
