Villagers protest low payoff for land used to establish road

Hundreds of Ashmoun villagers in Daqahliya protested on Sunday outside the governorate's public office against the low settlement to be disbursed by the government in return for handing their lands over for the building of a regional ring road.

The villagers stayed on the sidewalk outside the building and demanded a meeting with Governor Hesham Abdel Basset to discuss their problem, as well as their compensation.

Protesters said the government priced one kirat (175m2) at LE7,000, although its original price exceeds LE18,000 in the village. They called on the government to step back from its decision and reconsider the financial compensation.

They also complained about the government’s announcement that payment will be made in 25 percent increments. They demanded the settlement be paid in one batch so they can buy other land to cultivate.
