Wafd Party leader quits Advisory Council

Wafd Party leader Al-Sayed al-Badawy, member of the ruling military council's civilian Advisory Council, tendered his resignation from the council on Wednesday.

In his resignation, Badawy wrote: “I need to devote myself to the party in order to achieve what I believe in.”

“Badawy never criticized us,” said Mohamed al-Kholy, spokesperson for the council. “He was probably pressured by the party to resign.”

Hassan Nafea, head of the council’s National Consensus Committee, said Badawy will still attend the council’s meetings, which begin again on Saturday.

“He told me the Wafd Party approves the decisions agreed upon by all political forces,” Nafea said.
