Washington yet to nominate new Cairo ambassador: MENA

United States officials have not nominated a new ambassador to replace Anne Patterson in Cairo, state-run news agency MENA cited sources as saying.

The source confirmed that Patterson will be nominated as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.

However, the nomination will have to face approval from U.S. Congress, which will resume work in September.

U.S. newspapers meanwhile reported that former ambassador to Damascus, Robert Ford, could be sent to Cairo in Patterson's place.
