Authorities: Officer shot himself in publicity stunt

Authorities claim a drive-by shooting of a police officer by motorcyclists east of Cairo was merely a publicity stunt as investigators say the officer shot himself to be under the limelight.

Cairo security, running investigations into the alleged shooting of Major Mohamed al-Gohary in New Cairo, say that the officer shot himself three times in the leg in order to be famous and be awarded with honors by the Interior Ministry. The disclosure refuted his earlier allegations that motorcyclists passing-by shot at him.

Review of security camera recordings in the area failed to show any passing motorcycles. Authorities say the officer later admitted fabricating the incident for the sake of publicity.
