Egyptian Social Democratic Party rejects restrictions on freedoms under ‘terrorism’ pretext

The Egyptian Social Democratic Party supports the state and does not stand against its policies, but opposes some issues out of care for the nation, said party chairman Mohamed Aboul Ghar.

The party rejects restrictions on freedoms and human rights under the pretext of a war against terrorism, Aboul Ghar added.

Aboul Ghar said on the sidelines of the "Our Youth Are Our Hope" conference organized by the Egyptian Social Democratic Party on Saturday that the party backs stability, but not stagnancy as was the case under former President Hosni Mubarak leading to corruption.

The party encourages the private sector, which represents the bulk of the Egyptian economy. Laws to preserve workers' rights should be developed and there must be a peaceful handover of power, because that is the only guarantor to keep democracy.

Aboul Ghar stressed Egypt has not witnessed a peaceful handover of power since 1952.

Secretary General of the Egyptian Democratic Party Ahmed Fawzy said the party has not committed the mistakes of other parties, whether by allying with the Muslim Brotherhood during the last parliamentary elections, or accusing participants in the 25 January revolution of treason.

The party laments the Political Parties Affairs Committee rejection to establishing the politial parties of Tamarod and former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Sami Anan, Fawzy added.

Former Deputy Prime Minister and party deputy head Ziad Bahaa said the party encourages investment and management of state resources, pointing out that Egypt has huge economic problems and cannot respond to all the demands of state workers.
