Eight Egyptians sentenced to life in prison over joining ISIS

Cairo Criminal Court sentenced on Tuesday eight militants to life in prison in a case known in the local media as the "ISIS in Cairo" case.

The public prosecution had accused the suspects of joining an illegal group; communicating with a terrorist group that is based abroad (ISIS); and assaulting public and private properties.

In cooperation with police, the military launched raids against extremists calling themselves the "State of Sinai" or "Sinai Province" group which, in 2014, pledged allegiance to the so-called "Islamic State in Iraq and Syria" (ISIS, also known as Daesh).

The group killed hundreds of security personnel over the past three years.

In all, 292 persons were referred to military court last week over forming 22 terrorist cells affiliated to "State of Sinai" to carry out attacks, including plots to assassinate President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to the prosecutor’s statement.
