Orascom Telecom (OT) has received a letter from the Algerian government expressing its wish to negotiate a deal to buy Djezzy, OT's mobile-phone subsidiary in Algeria.

OT informed the Algerian government last Thursday that it was willing to give it priority in purchasing the subsidiary, especially after the latter protested the proposed sale of Djezzy to South African mobile phone company MTN.

MTN on Saturday said it was willing to discuss an offer regarding the purchase of Djezzy despite the Algerian government's objections.

UAE mobile phone company Etisalat, for its part, denied it was involved in negotiations for Djezzy, as has been claimed by the Algerian media.
