Security sources said that on Friday that Egyptian police have uncovered six tunnels designed for smuggling between the border city of Rafah and the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip.

A security official told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the police had also arrested two 15-year-old Palestinians who had sneaked into Egypt in order to smuggle goods to the Gaza strip.

Also on Friday, Egyptian police opened fire on an Eritrean immigrant as he attempted to cross the border into Israel illegally through a border point in central Sinai.

A security official said that the 21-year-old Eritrean immigrant, Salmun Sangine, was wounded in his right thigh. He was transferred to Al-Arish General Hospital to receive treatment.

Israel said this month that illegal immigration by African migrants has seen a marked increase recently, with about 10,000 cases per month.
