Embassy to evacuate Syria-based Egyptians via Beirut

The Egyptian Embassy in Damascus will repatriate Egyptians who want to leave Syria by land via Beirut, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Amr Roshdy said Wednesday.

Roshdy said there are 60 Egyptians still in the country who desire to leave.

Acting Egyptian Ambassador to Syria Alaa Abdel Aziz had reached an agreement with Syrian authorities to allow the Egyptians to travel through Lebanon despite not possessing Lebanese entry visas, Roshdy explained. Two buses have been hired to carry the Egyptians to Beirut, accompanied by Egyptian Consul Mohamed al-Fayoumy, who will facilitate border crossing procedures.

Roshdy said the ministry has tasked the Egyptian Embassy in Lebanon  with grant the 60 citizens passes and driving them to Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport before flying to Egypt. He added that EgyptAir would fly the returning citizens from Beirut on its Cairo-bound flights Wednesday and Thursday.
